A pneumatic or hydraulic dampener used to cushion or slow down mechanical movements. A loose-fitting piston moves back and forth in a cylinder which contains a fluid, either liquid or air. The piston is connected to the component whose movement is to be damped.
The component can move slowly with little opposition if the fluid is given time to move from one side of the piston to the other, but the dashpot restrains fast movement because of the time it takes to transfer the fluid from one side of the piston to the other.
A shimmy damper used on the nose wheel of a tricycle-gear airplane is a form of dashpot.
Industry:Aviation
A pneumatic starter for a gas turbine engine that uses gas pressure produced when powder in a cartridge burns in the breech of the starter.
The high-pressure gas produced by the burning powder spins a turbine geared to the engine compressor.
Industry:Aviation
A pocket of air trapped in a line which carries a liquid. The air blocks the flow of the liquid.
Industry:Aviation
A pocket of chemical salts that forms on the surface of a metal when it corrodes.
Industry:Aviation
A point on the final approach course which is one mile from the final approach fix on the side away from the airport or five miles from the landing threshold, whichever is farther from the landing threshold.
Industry:Aviation
A point on the line that divides it into two segments of equal length.
Industry:Aviation
A point on the runway beyond which a landing aircraft with a land and hold short (LAHSO) clearance is not authorized to proceed. The hold-short point may be located prior to an intersecting runway, taxiway, predetermined point, or approach/departure flight path.
