A special knot used to join two pieces of waxed rib-stitching cord. A splice knot is superior to a square knot because it will not slip.
Industry:Aviation
A special light that flashes with a brilliant, short-duration flash. A variable-frequency oscillator controls the stroboscope so it flashes at any required interval. Stroboscopes are used to study the motion of rotating or vibrating bodies. The stroboscope is shone on the object, and the frequency of the flashes is adjusted until the object appears to stand still or move in slow motion.
Industry:Aviation
A special multiple-disk brake using pure carbon for both rotating and stationary disks. Carbon brakes are used on some high-performance aircraft because of their ability to dissipate much more energy than a metal-disk brake of similar weight.
Industry:Aviation
A special oil that has little tendency to run off of a surface on which it is sprayed. Corrosion prevention compound is sprayed into the cylinders of a reciprocating engine when it is to be stored. This compound forms an airtight seal over the surface of the metal and keeps air and moisture away from the surface. When air and moisture cannot reach the metal, corrosion or rust cannot form on it.
Industry:Aviation
A special rib used in a Pratt truss airplane wing to take the place of a separate compression strut. A compression rib has strong cap strips and webs designed to withstand compressive loads.
Industry:Aviation
A special rivet used in a sheet metal structure that can be installed when there is access to only one side of the metal. The most widely used type of blind rivet has the end of its hollow shank upset by pulling a tapered plug up into the shank.
Industry:Aviation
A special room used for manufacturing and servicing precision equipment. The air in a clean room is filtered, and special precautions are taken to prevent dust, dirt, or other contamination entering the room. The workers wear special clothing to prevent contamination from their street clothes or from their hair.
Industry:Aviation
A special room whose walls are covered with radar absorbing materials. Anechoic rooms are used for testing radar components in an environment in which there are no echoes.
Industry:Aviation
A special shroud ring built into the outer turbine case of a gas turbine engine. The shroud fits tightly around the outside of the turbine wheel, which is equipped with special knife edges around its periphery. If the turbine blades creep (grow in length because of heat and high centrifugal loads), the knife edges will wear away the abradable shroud and do no damage.
Industry:Aviation
A special stud used to replace a standard stud that has worn its hole oversize. The thread pitch and type are the same as those of the standard stud, but the diameter of the oversize stud is greater.
