Black holes are formed when the gravity of a star becomes so great that nothing in its vicinity can escape, not even light.

Black holes are created when matter compacts enough to deform spacetime, generally when stars implode. Around the compact mass, there will be an area from which nothing can escape - even light. It should be noted that no-one has ever observed a black hole, but there is evidence of their existence.
