Es una enfermedad que afecta a una persona de cada 200.000, cuya principal manifestacion clínica es que los enfermos que la padecen desprenden un fuerte olor a pescado podrido. Se produce debido a un error cóngenito del metabolismo por un fallo en el sistema oxidante de la trimetilamina del hígado, que permite que esta enzima volátil, con un desagradable olor, pase a la sangre, las secreciones, el aliento y la orina. La enfermedad también se conoce como enzimopatía trimetitaminemia o trimetitaminuria.
